TheMiao laboratory at the University of Chicago has multiple postdoc openings tostudy cancer immunology and stem cell-immune interactions driving tissueregeneration.

About the PI:

Dr. YuxuanMiao obtained his Ph.D. from Duke University Medical Center, where he workedwith Dr. Soman Abraham, studying innate immune responses against bacterialinfections. He then joined Dr. Elaine Fuchs’s laboratory at RockefellerUniversity as a postdoc fellow. During his postdoc, he uncovered a surprisingimmune modulatory property of the adult tissue stem cells activated duringwounding healing to suppress inflammation, and this capacity can be hijacked bytumor-initiating cancer stem cells to evade anti-tumor immunity. Dr. Miao haspublished a number of first author research articles in top journals includingCell, Immunity, and Cell Host & Microbe. Dr. Miao has also been recognizedby many awards, including the Jane Coffin Childs Fellowship, NIH Pathway toIndependence Award (K99/R00), Hope Funds Fellowship.

Dr. Miao will join the Ben May Department of Cancer Research at University ofChicago as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in September 2020.

Research Areas:

Adult stemcells govern tissue homeostasis and orchestrate wound repair over the course ofan organism’s lifetime. As long-lived cells, the stem cells must have theability to endure repeated bouts of tissue inflammation initiated by injury,pathogens, and noxious agents. A thorough understanding of how stem cellsactively adapt to inflammation, and how stem cells perform normal functions ina harsh inflammatory environment, is vital for resolving many complex immunedisorders, such as psoriasis, chronic wounds and cancer, However, how adult stemcells react to inflammation is largely unknown. Importantly, cancer cellsfrequently hijack many stem cell features to drive tumorigenesis, includingimmune evasion. By designing sophisticated genetic engineered mouse cancer modelsthat can be effectively challenged by immunotherapy, Dr. Miao’s recent researchrevealed that whereas majority of cancer cells can be effectively eliminated bythe immunotherapy, a small group of stem cell-like tumor initiating cells are equippedwith unique molecular program which endows them with remarkable capacity tosurvive the immune attack.

Inspired by these fascinatingquestions and built upon his previous findings, using skin as the major modelorgan, Miao Lab aims to develop an innovative research program that examinesthe fascinating dialogues between stem cells and the immune system during variousphysiological and pathological conditions, with the ultimate goal of leveragingthis crosstalk to develop novel immunotherapies for epithelial cancers. Byintegrating state-of-art technologies such as in vivo gene editing, multi-omics analysis, immunologicalapproaches and advanced imaging techniques, Dr. Miao’s lab will 1) dissect stemcell-intrinsic factors for immune adaptation; 2) understand how stem cellsshape their immune microenvironment in cancer and wound; 3) define the innateimmune mechanisms sensing and responding to oncogenic events in stem cells.
